College Prize Double for Suzanne
For the second year in succession the prize for the Best 1st & 2nd Year Plumbing Apprentice at Perth College has been won by Suzanne Morrison of Aberfeldy, at the College’s annual prizegiving in mid June.
The SP Education & Training Trust Apprentice Shield is awarded from the Scottish & Northern Ireland Plumbing Employers Federation which decides upon the winner from a shortleat of students nominated by Perth College lecturers. It is accomopanied by a certificate and a cheque for £50.00.
Suzanne, pictured here with the trophy, now anticipates a very tough third year ahead during which she aims to gain her Corgi Qualifications and to finish her apprenticeship. |

“This second year has not been any easy one,” she told Comment. “Each apprentice was given a room in which to plumb in a toilet, basin, shower, hot water cylinder, back boiler, copper pipework, radiator with MI pipework, cold water storage cistern, plus a header tank and drainage.
“Once completed they were all judged and, out of ten rooms, the best three were selected. Whilst I was in that top three unfortunately I didn’t win that prize, but was pleased to have finished there though.”
Determined
Being a woman in a man’s profession she was determined to be taken seriously from the outset when she began her apprenticeship. “At college I have done that by working harder than any of the other apprentices and just keeping my head down. This has paid off two years in a row, and now I have gained a fair amount of respect from my tutors and my peers for work which I have produced at college.”
Hat Trick?
To complete a hat trick of prizewinning Suzanne would now have to win the 3rd year prize. Should she succeed in that, she would then go forward in competition with all 3rd year prize winners from all the other colleges in Scotland.
She has, however, a huge incentive for this other than cash award and trophy glory. At that highest level the eventual winner receives exclusive, top level training in specialist areas of plumbing which would permit him - or her - to offer exclusive fields of service such as eco plumbing and advanced lead working.
