New Junior Gold Panning Champ

On completion of all the heats of the 2007 Perthshire Junior Gold Panning Championships held at Highland Adventure Safaris, Katy Cox from Aberfeldy won through as this year’s Champion.

10 year old Katy follows in the footsteps of the 2005 Champion, Jenni Ross from Aberfeldy, and the 2006 Champion, Wessel Wurth from the Heinenoord in the Netherlands.

With over 200 competitors battling it out to find gold and gemstones in the gold panning water flume at the Safari Lodge near Aberfeldy, the competition had been particularly fierce this time.

Katy (pictured right) came out tops thanks to a steady hand and a keen eye for gold, although she was pushed all the way by 7½ year old Amie Key from Wolfhill (pictured below), who came first in the ‘8 & Under’ age group.

Special Prizes

Both Katy and Amie win special prizes. Katy will enjoy a 2½ hour Land Rover Safari into the Perthshire hills for 4 people, followed by lunch at the Scottish Farm Shop Café at the Safari Lodge, courtesy of Highland Adventure Safaris, the organisers of the Perthshire Junior Gold Panning Championships.

Organiser Donald Riddell told Comment: “We’ve now organised the Perthshire Junior Gold Panning Championships for three years and each year we have attracted more competitors. The idea of finding gold certainly seems to be inspiring growing numbers of junior panners.”

“To date no one has made their fortune, but everyone has gone home with gemstones and many have also been able to take away flecks of real gold that they found. Maybe next year one of the competitors will find enough gold to make them rich for the rest of their life!”
