Rural Fuel Duty Concessions: MP Presses Chancellor
Pete Wishart MP is supporting SNP representations to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, asking if his department would consider exempting the rural areas of Scotland from the proposed 2p increase in fuel duty scheduled for 1 October.
Motorists in rural Scotland have seen the cost of petrol escalate in the past two months in some areas by as much as 10p per litre.
“I am asking the Chancellor, Gordon Brown, to consider exempting rural areas like Highland Perthshire from this increase in October,” said the MP. “This is another unfair burden on Island motorists who are already paying through the roof for their fuel. |

“I would like to remind the Chancellor of the concession the French Government have won from the EU - to allow it to cut up to 3 per cent from fuel tax in rural areas. This decrease will be in place until 2011 and will see motorists in the rural areas of France making savings on their fuel costs in that time.
“Why can’t the same happen in the United Kingdom?”, the MP queries.
